The Dawn of Civilization: financial records. http://moneygab.com/the-dawn-of-financial-civilization-financial-records/ http://moneygab.com/the-dawn-of-financial-civilization-financial-records/#comments Sat, 11 Jul 2009 08:04:01 +0000 Nathan http://moneygab.com/?p=154 Not writing down your financial records, no matter how small, is similar to meeting tribes that do not read or write.

Many human tribes have existed for thousands of years without a written history. No one knows their past, except for the oral stories they’ve passed on. And their bones. Other than that, they have nothing.

For some reason, when tribes began to write down their history, ideas, and progress they advance.

Maybe it is the same for us.

Will we see advancement when we begin to record what comes in and out financially in our lives?

Why not start today?

What will our personal and professional advancement look like when we begin to record our past, ideas, and progress?

I’m not exactly sure how certain it is, but I read once that all of ancient civilization started because some business men needed a way to record their transactions, and from there writing began. I think it was cuneiform.

*update*

I did a little more research.

“Mesopotamia’s “proto-literate” period spans the 35th to 32nd centuries. The first documents unequivocally written in the Sumerian language date to the 31st century, found at Jemdet Nasr.
The Sumerians of the Uruk period used clay tokens to count their agricultural and manufactured foods. They would place the tokens in hollow clay containers and mark the lids with the number of tokens inside. They impressed a picture of the token inside as many times as the amount of tokens. Later they realized that they would not have to use the tokens and the scripture on the containers and started using only the scripture. So they would not have to write 100 pictures for 100 tokens they started making symbols for an amount of tokens. Thus writing began.[2]

One way to eliminate costs is to list all of your recurring costs and then find a way to lower, or eliminate, each one.

A tool to start doing this comes from one of our readers, Gretchen. She sent me the link to Billshrink.com

It’s a fun little site that can really bring in more income. Thanks, Gretchen!

MoneyGab Zen Moments: the two truths. http://moneygab.com/moneygab-zen-moments-the-two-truths/ http://moneygab.com/moneygab-zen-moments-the-two-truths/#comments Thu, 09 Jul 2009 01:39:26 +0000 Nathan http://moneygab.com/?p=73 According to Zen teachings, there are two truths, relative and absolute truth.

A relative truth is like understanding that a particular wave exists and is different from other waves. They have a beginning and ending.

An absolute truth, however,  would be that waves do not begin or end, since they all come from the same source, the ocean.

As we go about this financial journey, and as we pay more attention to financial principles and information, it is wise to realize that most of the financial world is a relative truth. It comes, it goes, and there is constant change.

But as we ride these waves, maybe we can step back sometimes and appreciate the largess of the ocean and how wonderful it all goes together.

Peace to you.

-Nate
